Sharks, Swim-Throughs, and Sandy Reefs

Malapascua is a small island off the northern end of Cebu. Like Cozumel or Roatán, you could swear the heavens created this place for the enjoyment of scuba divers. You can spot numerous shark species here, and there’s a fun assortment of swim throughs to explore and critters to find within the sandy patch reefs.

If You Love Sharks
Shark diving is the main attraction at Malapascua, and there’s no chum required. Whitetip reef sharks love these waters (it’s common to find them napping together within the swim-throughs at Gato Island), and you can also spot silvertips. Most famously, there’s thresher sharks. Schooling thresher sharks (and also hammerheads and manta rays) will visit the cleaning station at Monad Shoal.

If You Enjoy Critter Diving
Some of the dive sites, like Capitancillo Island, have exciting caves and reef overhangs that are covered by clouds of tropical fish. But, for the most part, Malapascua has sandy patch reefs with spectacular critter diving, and a nice variety of soft and black corals. Look for sea snakes, blue-spotted stingrays, and emperor angelfish while you’re moseying around.

If You’re an Advanced Diver
Malapascua is most famous for the thresher shark cleaning station, which requires the advanced certification. Advanced divers can also visit the Doña Marilyn, a natural wreck that sits at 110 feet. Unfortunately, her sinking caused significant loss of life, but she’s gained new life as an underwater tomb, fostering a variety of gorgeous soft
