Scuba Diving in Bali

Bali is home to the USAT Liberty Wreck, which features a massive cargo hold that’s a playground of light and shadow. It’s a bucket list wreck dive, no doubt.

Bali does not have the most spectacular coral reefs, but the critter diving is excellent and there’s something beautiful about the black sand reefs on the eastern shores of the island. The Gili Islands are well-worth the excursion; you can slip away from the tourist crowds and go drift diving with manta rays and other pelagic creatures.

You will enjoy Bali…

If You Enjoy Variety
What we love about Bali is the variety, both above and below the surface. There’s wrecks, critter diving, drift diving, and pelagic encounters, and a feast of cultural adventures on the topside.

If You Don’t Mind Hopping Around
Amed is recognized as the main “scuba diving village” and gives you access to the world-famous USAT Liberty Wreck. But, for the most part, this area is mostly critter diving along slopes of black volcanic sand. That’s not a bad thing — this is the Coral Triangle, after all, and the biodiversity is spectacular. However, you can also slip out to the Gili Islands for drift diving with manta rays, or look for sunfish and sea turtles at Nusa Penida. If you’re willing to drive a big circle around the island, you can dive some beautiful coral reefs at Menjangan Island — Bali’s hidden gem.

If You Don’t Mind Crowds
Bali gets tremendously crowded in the summertime, and many of the dive sites will get congested with divers and boat traffic. There are no major highways, so the roads can get equally congested and make it difficult to get from one place to the next. It might be better to visit in the cooler, winter months when there are fewer tourists.

Most people are drawn to Bali by her numerous cultural adventures: beautiful beaches, luxurious accommodations, hiking, and opportunities to immerse yourself in the Hindu culture.
