A small peninsula at the southern end of Luzon, Anilao is among the world’s most popular destinations for critter diving, and you’ll be right at home if you enjoy the colorful flamboyance of nudibranchs. But there’s also a nice variety of coral reefs that give you exactly what you’d expect from a Southeast Asian dive vacation.

Critter diving is the main attraction in Anilao, so macro photographers will get their fix on the small and rare animals that hide within the sand and coral heads. But there’s also fun coral reefs to explore, like Sombrero Island — a shallow reef with steep drop-offs, and numerous swim-throughs among crevices and boulder formations.

Anilao is a haven for macro photographers, with an abundance of shrimp, pygmy seahorses, frogfish, pipefish, bobbit worms, octopuses, and tons of nudibranchs — including the rare ghost nudibranch.

Anilao is famous for critter diving, but you’ve got to remember that this is the Coral Triangle — there’s still a huge variety of marine species, big and small. Anilao dive sites feature sheltered bays and coves, but also coral walls with strong currents. Sea turtles, reef sharks, and eagle rays are not uncommon sightings.
