We prefer 2 destinations in Malaysia: Sipadan and Tioman.
Sipadan is the crown jewel, world-famous for schools of pelagic fish and a countless number of sea turtles. Tioman is a rugged, ecological paradise, with healthy hard coral, tons of fish, and a dazzling number of swim-throughs.
You will enjoy Malaysia…
If You Enjoy Leisurely Diving
The diving in Malaysia is as easy-going as the locals. Tioman dive sites are smooth and shallow, but there’s plenty of incredible swim-throughs and rich biodiversity that will entertain divers of all levels. Sipadan is deep and drifty (the advanced certification is required) but it’s really some of the easiest drift diving there is. The calm water conditions make it easier to enjoy the country’s beautiful reefscapes and bustling marine life.
If You’re Looking for Healthy Reefs
Sipadan is located within the Coral Triangle, and has spectacular walls with over 600 coral species. Tioman has very healthy fields of hard coral, and they’re carved with swim-throughs and covered inside and out with tropical fish. Malaysian waters have amazing biodiversity.
If You’re Looking for a Great Value
Malaysia is often overlooked by travelers — scuba divers or otherwise — so you’re able to experience the beauty of Southeast Asia for a fraction of the price of other destinations in this region.

Local Malaysians are extremely kind, and most of them speak pretty good English, which makes Malaysia one of the region’s most accessible destinations for American travelers.
Whether you’re going to Sipdan or Tioman, you should plan a couple nights in the capital city of Kuala Lumpur; our divers who visit Tioman usually add a night in Singapore, too.
If you’re going to Sipadan, you can embark on jungle adventures in Malaysian Borneo.
