La Paz

Where Big Animals Come to You

If you want to dive the Sea of Cortez, but you’re not keen on liveaboard diving, then La Paz is the destination for you. From the dive resorts in La Paz, you can explore beautiful coral reefs and go swimming with playful sea lion colonies at Los Islotes.

If you prefer a liveaboard, see our page on the Sea of Cortez.

Best time to travel: We recommend October through December when the water is warm and you can dive with the sea lions. August – October the water temp ranges from 75°F to 85°F, and you will see schools of fish, sea lions and maybe some manta rays.  You can dive year round but keep in mind water temps can be really cold January – May, and very low visibility.  Diving: Boat.  Underwater Life: hawksbill turtles, trumpet fish, wrasse, hogfish, spotted drum fish, amberjacks, lobster, octopus, and even long snout seahorses. Level: All.  Sea Temps: 80°F – 85°F Air Temps: 70°F – 85°F.  Accommodations: Land-Based Accommodations. Other Adventures: Whale watching, beach combing, trips through the desert, excellent Mexican seafood, star gazing, visiting the Spanish Missions.

La Paz Scuba Diving

There’s a few islands that lie off the coast of La Paz, including Isla Espiritu Santo and Isla Ceralvo, which have excellent dive sites, and the reefs have a variety of tropical fish that include angelfish and seahorses. There’s also a range of underwater seamounts, the most famous being El Bajo, which is your best bet for pelagic encounters.

Keep in mind that the Sea of Cortez is highly seasonal and the water can get quite cold during certain times of year, with fluctuating visibility. Even during warmer seasons, there can be a 10-degree thermocline at deeper depths.
