Roatán
A Fan Favorite
Divers who discover Roatán often sing her praises. She’s the largest of the 3 Bay Islands in Honduras, and by far the most visited. Like Cozumel — another fan favorite — Roatán has mellow drift diving and a nice variety of coral formations. What sets her apart are the big wrecks and magnetic local vibes. She’s a tough place to leave, which is why so many divers return.
Best Time to Travel: Dry Season: Dec-Apr, Wet Season: May-Nov. Diving: Boat and Shore. Roatán lies at the southern end of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef, and you can expect all the goodness provided by this reef system: beautiful coral walls with excellent swim-throughs, mangrove lagoons, and lots of awesome critters to find — especially seahorses. There are sandy patch reefs with garden eels, 2 enormous wrecks, and pelagic encounters that include hammerhead sharks and eagle rays.

If You Enjoy Leisurely Diving
There’s a lot of drift diving in Roatán, but the currents are very slow and there’s excellent visibility. Dive sites like Dolphin Den and Calvin’s Crack are ripe with swim-throughs, which break up the monotony of wall diving.
If You Enjoy Wreck Diving
Roatán has 2 major wrecks: El Águila, a 230-foot cargo wreck, and Odyssey, a 300-foot wreck that lies pretty deep at 115 feet (but it’s also 85-feet tall). Marine life has wasted no time turning these wrecks into gorgeous reefs, and they’re easier to appreciate in Roatán’s hi viz.
