Maldives
Pretty as the Pictures
The Maldives, which spans a chain of atolls in the Indian Ocean, is often the poster child of luxury tourism, with its gorgeous tropical scenery and lavish water bungalows. The islands are tiny, but the turquoise waters between them have enormous coral reefs and very big animals.
Best Time to Travel: Year-Round. Diving: Boat Diving. Unique Marine Life: Manta Rays, Eagle Rays, Silvertip Sharks, Whale Sharks, Nurse Sharks, Glass Fish, Yellow Snappers, Napoleon Wrasse. Level: Intermediate & Advanced. Sea Temps: Average 83°F. Air Temps: Average 85°F. Accommodations: Liveaboard.
You’ve got to dive the Maldives on a liveaboard. The islands are tiny, and it’s not easy to hop from one atoll to the next; if you stay on a single island then you’ll have much fewer dive sites to visit.
A liveaboard will get you to the best dive sites around the country and provide you with the most exciting animal encounters. After your liveaboard, you can always book a couple nights at a land-based resort if you want to experience the Maldives’ famous water bungalows.
You will enjoy the Maldives…
If You’re Looking for Beautiful Coral Reefs
The walls of the atolls are covered in beautiful coral gardens, with magnificent fields of hard coral at the top of the walls. There’s lush soft coral at the underwater pinnacles, and a wide variety of artificial wrecks that are filled with interesting critters, like frogfish and stonefish.
If You’re Seeking Pelagic Encounters
Maldives is famous for sharks and manta rays. This is one of the only places in the world where you can do the “manta ray feeding dive,” but there are also cleaning stations where you can see these animals in their natural circumstances. Expect to see lots of sharks, especially nurse sharks and silvertips. Whale sharks make appearances, too.
If You’re Looking for Variety
You get a little bit of everything in the Maldives: expansive walls with gorgeous table corals, underwater pinnacles, shark diving (with and without feeding), and lots of drift diving with reef hooks.

Blue Force Three was designed exclusively for diving, and features 12 cabins with large, communal lounge areas that foster a friendly and social atmosphere. This is a liveaboard that is truly luxurious but totally unpretentious.

Most travelers overnight in Hulhumale as they wait for their liveaboard departure / resort transfer. The neighboring island of Malé — also the capital city — is worth a short excursion, but remember this is an island for the locals and you’ll get odd looks from the city’s residents if you’re exploring without a tour group.
Your liveaboard will offer the most adventure: excursions to secluded sandbars, private barbecues on a remote island, village trips, and tours of Malé.
