Make port at Barbados, where there’s sunken treasure aplenty!
By treasure, we mean wrecks. Barbados is the wreck-diving capital of the Caribbean, with a treasure trove of excellent vessels including the 365-foot Stavronkita freighter. Barbados also has a nice variety of landlubber activities, such as caving, hiking, and rum tasting (undoubtedly the most pirate-savvy adventure of the bunch).
You might consider Barbados for your next dive vacation if you…
If You Love Wrecks
The flagship wreck is the Stavronikita, a huge 365-foot freighter that was sunk after a fire damaged the ship beyond repair. She’s an elegant wreck, with her still-intact masts nearly reaching the surface. The Friars Crag is another popular wreck that sits at 55 feet and has a gorgeous coral reef neighboring it. Both of these wrecks are best-suited for advanced divers.
You can dive shallower wrecks at Carlisle Bay. Fan favorites include the Bajan Queen, Elion, Ce-Trek, and the SS Cornwallis — which was tragically torpedoed by a German U-boat in World War II. Sea turtles love the wrecks in Carlisle Bay, as do freedivers.
If You Love Topside Adventures
If you’re not a wreck enthusiast, you’ll find Barbados most appealing if you only want to go diving for half your vacation. Barbados has plenty of topside adventures to fill the other half. You can go fishing, golfing, caving, and horseback riding, or discover Bridgetown’s gorgeous colonial architecture and fantastic shopping. The Mount Gay Rum Distillery is also worth a tour (and a tasting).
If You’re Looking for a Beach Vacation
Barbados is built for a beach vacation, with soft-sand beaches and crystal-clear water. Plus, there are many restaurants and bars gracing the beachfront, and some excellent resorts.
If You’re Looking for a Romantic Getaway
What makes Barbados a great romantic getaway is the laid-back vibe and old-world charm. Romantic sunset dinners on the beach? Absolutely! And from a hospitality perspective, Barbados has all the amenities you need to enjoy a romantic retreat with your sweetheart.
